In 1982, Hartmut Ortlieb founded what is today’s Ortlieb Sportartikel GmbH in Nürnberg, Germany. The first products were made in response to a personal need for waterproof equipment. Surprisingly such things were not available at the time! Hartmut’s first products were created in a backyard garage in preparation for his first long bicycle and climbing tours. Hand made on his mother’s sewing machine, they comprised dry bags and bicycle panniers made from recycled truck tarps.
Today Ortlieb products are characterised by tightly sealed closure systems such as roll closures, waterproof zippers, velcro, and sliding seal closures. The numerous products have been specially designed by a multidisciplinary team who constantly develop new ideas in response to the increasing demands from the market for superior waterproofing.
Protection of the environment plays a key role in the daily process of work and production at Ortlieb. Furthermore, the company is an active member of various interest organisations and working groups within the outdoors industry. Since 2008, Ortlieb has been a member of the 'Association for Conservation' of the European Outdoor Group. This initiative collects funds which are then invested in environmental protection projects all over the world.
